Meet Marko Topchii, champion guitarist and ambassador of Ukrainian music
Guitarist Marko Topchii, the 2023 winner of the Guitar Foundation of America’s International Concert Artists Competition, visited Arizona State University in January 2025 as part of a concert tour. Arizona PBS spoke with him about his experiences as a competitor and about his resolve to be a representative for Ukraine.

BIO

Marko Topchii

Marko Topchii, born in Kyiv (Ukraine) to a musical family, began his guitar studies with Volodymyr Homenyuk at the age of 4 and graduated the Kharkiv Conservatory with Volodymyr Dotsenko at 21, continuing with an extensive three-year postgraduate programme at the Kyiv Music Academy with Yuri Aleksik.

In 2018 he joined the postgraduate performance program at the San Francisco Conservatory, in 2023 - a master soloist at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Geneve with Judicaёl Perroy.

Marko had won more than 100 awards worldwide in international classical guitar competitions (no age limit, financial award). Among them - 55 first prizes.

He had appeared with solo recitals at Carnegie Hall, Yamaha Ginza Hall (Tokyo), Halle Cortot (Paris) and others.

As part of his GFA winner's tour, Marko performed 50 concerts in the US, Canada and Mexico, including his second performance at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall.

Often performing with orchestras, his repertoire covers most of the known works for guitar and orchestra by Rodrigo, Villa-Lobos, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Ponce, Brouwer, Abril, Giuliani, Bacarisse and his own arrangement of Bach BWV 1052 d-moll.

Marko is an Artist of the Augustine strings and plays guitars made by Julian Dammann.
